Welcome to City + Shells!
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog!
I have wanted to start a blog for a while now, but I was honestly unsure of what the reaction would be. Would people really care what I had to say? Would I seem narcissistic posting all about my life? Would people be rude and say mean things? Would I fail?
Well, there are a million reasons not to do something, and considering I am turning 26 (old!), I don't want to spend the rest of my life wishing I did this when I had the chance. I want to at least try to create something meaningful for myself, even if it means I could possibly fail.
So here we are...
Behind the Name
I've always identified with having a split-life – spending weekdays in bustling Brooklyn and lazy weekends at the Jersey shore. I'm an urban mermaid if you will.
My love for both places, and my inability to quit either, is incorporated into my everyday style, both in how I decorate my home and present myself. Identifying my beach-meets-the-city-style helped me to define who I am and how I wanted people to see me.
My Foray Into Home Design and Decor
After I moved home after college, I honestly went through a rough patch. Even though my parents are actually some of the most fun people ever, it was a huge blow to my ego to have to move back home. With no job straight out of school and no income, there was no chance of be being able to stay in the city.
I embraced it the best that I could, and the day I moved home, my dad and I ripped up my bedroom carpet, painted the walls, and threw out any remnants of childhood the room had left. Even though I knew I wasn't going to be there for long, I knew that making my little corner of the house my own was very important to me. So I went crazy scouring Pinterest, and home goods, and my favorite website, Apartment Therapy, and started to put together a room I truly loved.
I sooner later got out of that rut and landed a job at that dream company (Apartment Therapy), the one who had helped me stay sane and stylish during my transition home, and I've been living, breathing, and obsessiving over home pretty much ever since.
Bringing it to Life
So we have the name, we have the backstory, and now we are here – starting a blog.
Ultimately, my goal with City + Shells is to give you, my readers, the tools you need to build the life at home that you want for yourself, just like I did back in 2010. I am no expert, trust me, but I do know that building a life for yourself that you can be proud of doesn't require exorbitant amounts of money and expert knowledge. It takes a little bit of faith, a sprinkle of confidence, and a willingness to try.
Through approachable guides and attainable projects, I hope to bring you a little dose of daily inspiration. If I do that, I feel I have been successful.
